Ptuji ready for the traditional Kurentovanje festival

0

The town of Ptuj in Slovenia is gearing up for its annual Kurentovanje Festival, one of the country’s most beloved cultural events. Known for its colorful processions and traditional costumes, the festival celebrates the end of winter and the arrival of spring. It is rooted in ancient customs and has become a major attraction, drawing both locals and international visitors to experience its unique blend of folklore, music, and festivities.

Kurentovanje, which lasts for several days, is centered around the figure of the “Kurent,” a traditional character believed to chase away winter and evil spirits. Participants dressed as Kurents don elaborate sheepskin costumes and masks, and parade through the streets, accompanied by musicians, dancers, and performers in vibrant attire.

This year’s festival promises to continue the rich tradition, with a variety of events including street performances, workshops, and exhibitions highlighting Slovenian folklore. Visitors will have the opportunity to witness the vibrant culture of Ptuj and take part in the festivities, which have become a symbol of the town’s heritage.

In recent years, Kurentovanje has gained international recognition, and the event is now included on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This acknowledgment has further boosted its popularity, turning it into a must-see event for those interested in cultural traditions and history.

As the town of Ptuj prepares to welcome guests, the Kurentovanje Festival remains a significant cultural highlight, celebrating both the past and the renewal of the seasons in a way that bridges tradition and modernity.
