France sends strict warning to Turkey on Cyprus EEZ- EP President also expresses support

France has issued a firm warning to Turkey regarding its activities within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Cyprus, expressing serious concerns about ongoing drilling operations in the region. The French government stressed that Turkey’s actions are in violation of international law and urged Ankara to cease its exploration efforts in the disputed waters.

The warning from France comes amidst heightened tensions in the eastern Mediterranean, where Turkey has been conducting drilling operations despite objections from Cyprus and several other European Union member states. French officials underscored their support for Cyprus, calling on Turkey to respect the sovereignty of EU member states and adhere to established international maritime boundaries.

In addition to France’s warning, the President of the European Parliament also voiced support for Cyprus. The EU Parliament president emphasized that Cyprus has the full backing of the European Union in defending its rights over its EEZ. The EU has been closely monitoring the situation, with some member states advocating for potential sanctions if Turkey continues its operations in the region.

The dispute over Cyprus’s EEZ has become a focal point in the broader geopolitical tensions in the eastern Mediterranean, with both sides standing firm on their positions. Turkey argues that its exploration activities are legal and within areas it claims as part of its continental shelf, while Cyprus and the EU maintain that these actions violate Cypriot sovereignty.

France’s warning and the strong support from EU institutions signal a growing resolve among European nations to address the ongoing situation. As diplomatic efforts continue, the international community is watching closely to see how the standoff will be resolved.
