Skopje, June 3, 2013
Zoran Zaev was elected last night the new leader of the largest opposition party in FYR Macedonia, Social Democratic League of Macedonia (LSDM).
Up until now, Zaev has been the vice chairman of the party and for the third time, he has been elected as chairman of the commune of Strumice. He managed to secure the trust of 395 party delegates in the 14th congress of this party held in Skopje on Saturday. Racing against him were the current leader of the party, Zoran Jovanovski, who secured 137 votes and Kire Naumov who only secured 15 votes.
Zaev appealed to the members of the party to unite and show engagement in order to win, like he said, against Gruevski’s regime.
“None of the candidates won today, but LSDM did. This lesson was a lesson of democracy as to how party elections should be held. I appeal for unity, because this is the only way we can win against Gruevski’s regime”, declared Zaev. Radmilla Sheqerinska is expected to be vice chairman of the party and is expected to serve as a powerful ally for the leadership of this party, after the departure of the veteran leader Branko Crvenkovski.
Zaev was born in Strumice in 1974, he’s married and has two children. In 2003 he was elected member of parliament for LSDM, whereas in 2005 he was elected head of the commune of Strumice. This mandate was won three times by him including that won in March local government elections. Zaev has also held the post of the party vice chairman, whereas in 2008, for a short period of time he also served as chairman of the party. /ibna/
