The Health Ministry has confirmed the third case of Zika virus importation to Romania, this time involving a man who travelled to the Dominican Republic.

In a press statement released on Thursday, the ministry says it is about a 36-year-old man of Cluj-Napoca who travelled to the Dominican Republic, a country reporting active Zika virus transmission, July 6-13. The man also went to the US July 13-20 and returned to Romania on July 21, the ministry says.

On July 22, the man showed up at the Cluj-Napoca Communicable Disease Hospital with fever and generalised skin eruptions, while on July 25, samples collected from the patient were submitted for testing to the Cantacuzino Institute. The results came back positive for the Zika virus.

The ministry says the man is out of harm’s way and following the orders of the doctors and the Cluj Public Health Directorate.
