China is ready to improve the level of bilateral relations and to create new situation of mutual cooperation together with Serbia, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Friday, at the beginning of his three days official visit to Serbia. Xi is the first Chinese head of state to visit Belgrade in 32 years.

Xi has praised the “beautiful Republic of Serbia” and “most cordially” greeted the government and people of Serbia “on behalf of the government and people of China”. The traditional friendship of two countries and peoples has resisted to historical temptations and turbulent changes on international and national stage “marking new glow from the old tradition”, Chinese president stressed.

Xi said that Chinese-Serbian relations have been strengthening especially after year 2009 when the agreement on strategic partnership was signed.

“Mutual political confidence is strengthening while cooperation in energy, transport infrastructure and agriculture are new glow points; cultural exchange is dynamic and exchange of people is intensive more than ever”, Xi said.

In his words, Serbia and China maintain communication considering international and regional issues and have good cooperation in establishing links between China and Central-east European countries.

In the first event during the visit, Xi and his Serbian counterpart Tomislav Nikolic laid wreaths at the monument of Chinese embassy officials killed during NATO bombing in 1999.

The two heads of states have also put the cornerstone for the Chinese Culture Center in Belgrade and revealed a monument of Confucius.

At the official dinner, Nikolic gave a present to his guest – a photo of Xi’s father Xi Zhongxun, the late Chinese political leader, while visiting Belgrade in 1986.
