Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Evangelos Venizelos, will participate from September 21-28, 2014, as head of the Greek delegation to the works of the 69th General Assembly of the United Nations in New York.
On Sunday, September 21, Venizelos will have a private meeting with the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, during which he will report on the key issues of the greek foreign policy. The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister will also meet with the President of the Republic of Cyprus Law. Anastasiades and Foreign Minister Kasoulides have also scheduled a meeting with the new Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide.
During the “Ministerial Week” of the General Assembly, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs will have successive, bilateral and multilateral meetings with officials of other countries and representatives of international organizations, as well as public speeches and interventions, which will culminate on Saturday afternoon, September 27, with the speech that will be addressed to the plenary session of the 69th General Assembly of the United Nations.
According to current schedule, in addition to Venizelos’ meetings with his counterparts within the Euro-Atlantic institutions, meetings will be held, in chronological order, with the Foreign Ministers of Qatar, the Palestinian Authority, Algeria, Montenegro, Iran, India, Turkey, Brazil, Andorra, Egypt, San Marino, Georgia and Israel.
The Greek Foreign minister will also participate in a trilateral meeting with his counterparts from Cyprus and Egypt, during which they will examine the recent developments in the wider Eastern Mediterranean, as well as ways of strengthening trilateral cooperation.
At the multilateral level, Venizelos will attend the coordination meeting of Foreign Ministers of the European Union, will attend a working dinner of the Foreign Ministers of EU – NATO, while he will also take part in the meeting of Member States of the Cooperation Process for South-East Europe, and to the Ministerial Meeting of the OAS state-members.
The Deputy Prime Minister will also attend a working dinner for the Middle East, where he will discuss the latest developments in Libya, Syria, Iraq and Palestine and will host a breakfast meeting for the Foreign Ministers of member States of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation, of which Greece has the periodic presidency at present.
In the context of the works of the General Assembly, Venizelos will take part in the Summit on Climate, will deliver a speech at the Ministerial Consultations on the humanitarian crisis in Syria, and its neighboring countries, and participate in a Security Council Debate on the participation of foreign terrorist fighters in the fighting. In addition, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs will participate in high-level events for Ebola, and in a Summit on the “Empowerment of Peacekeeping Operations”.
On the sidelines of his contacts during the “Ministerial Week” of the General Council of the UN, Venizelos will also hold meetings with Jewish organizations in the United States, while he will also attend a manifestation of American Jewish Committee on anti-Semitism.
Of particular importance will be the contacts that the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs will have with representatives of the Greek Diaspora organizations of the America, and finally, the private meeting he will have on Monday, September 22, with His Eminence Archbishop of America, Demetrius.
