A committee of experts is  examining ways to upgrade Greek identity cards so they meet US standards, in order for the Greeks to get tourist visa for the  USA in the future. USA insist that the new IDs must have a chip with biometric data like iris scanning and they say fingerprints are not enough. Greeks are reluctant due to the fact that such an upgrade would  cost more then 80 million Euros.

The main -official-  reason USA  insist for he chip is that greek IDs  are  easy to forge and one can easily use them in order to obtain a legal  passport. According  to the greek newspaper  “Kathimerini”, the subject is under consideration and came also up during the visit of  US Secretary of State John Kerry to Athens last Friday. Nevertheless USA might demand special IDs for the Greeks in order to give them visa not only because of the ISIS terrorist attacks in Paris and elsewhere, but also for the threat  greek terrorist groups might pose.
