USA backs Skopje’s Euro Atlantic aspirations, says US senior official

The vice US secretary of state, Victoria Nuland, declared today from Skopje that USA backs the Euro Atlantic aspirations of FYR Macedonia and that these aspirations are part of the USA’s priorities.

“USA will continue to offer a strong support for the process of the solution of the name dispute which is brokered by the UNO, in order for Macedonia to be granted its well deserved place in the NATO and EU. This is a priority for the USA”, declared Nuland following the meeting with prime minister Nikola Gruevski.

Mrs. Nuland underlined that she has had an open and sincere talk about the issues concerning the country and that she has thanked prime minister Gruevski on this.

“This is an important moment for Macedonia and the region, given that this new government has just entered office. USA backs Macedonia’s vision that stems from Ohrid, as a state moving forward toward prosperity and democracy. I was very happy when the prime minister told me that the reforms are moving forward and this is essential for the two communities in the country to cooperate together. This is in the best interest of the USA, because we were part of this vision and we have invested on this vision of integration and security”, said vice US secretary of state.

For the first time, Nuland also mentioned the developing aspect with concrete projects of Albanian inhabited areas in FYROM. “We also talked as to how we can improve cohabitation, including those regions of the country inhabited by Albanians. We want to do this with our investors, companies and with this to strengthen the economic integration in these regions and the development of both communities”, declared Nuland.

The vice US secretary of state underlined that the USA thank the Macedonian army for its role and courage in the ISAF international mission in Afghanistan. Nuland held today in Skopje closed door meetings with political leaders, Ali Ahmeti of the Democratic Union for Integration (BDI) and leader of the opposition Macedonian party, Macedonian Social Democratic League (LSDM), Zoran Zaev. /ibna/
