US lawmaker, Elliot Engel said on Thursday in Presevo that he is not in favour of the idea for land swaps and that efforts must focus on achieving a long-term peace agreement between Kosovo and Serbia. Engel held a visit to Presevo, a region which is mostly inhabited by an Albanian majority, in a fact gathering mission.
After a meeting with the mayor of Presevo, Shqiprim Arifi, he also spoke about his long involvement in matters concerning the Balkans and the independence of Kosovo, stressing the need for an agreement between Kosovo and Serbia.
“I don’t think exchanging territories would be the right solution. I’m worried about this, because if you start to change borders in the Balkans, where will this end? There are many other countries that want to change their borders and this was the reason why the Balkans had trouble in the first place”, he said.
The mayor of Presevo, Shqiprim Arifi said that the US must be more present in the Presevo Valley.
“I have demanded Mr. Engel a higher US presence in the Presevo Valley. Lack of US presence here allows others, who work against the West’s interests, to be present here”, Arifi said. /ibna/
