The US embassy has released a press statement today where it urges opposition protesters to distance themselves from any acts of violence ahead of Saturday’s big demonstration that the opposition has announced.
According to this embassy “the right to engage in peaceful protest is a fundamental democratic right.”
The US embassy also says that “for the past several months, the majority of participants has exercised its democratic right to peacefully protest. However, the moment a peaceful protest is marred by an act of violence, by even one individual, the democratic purpose of the protest is compromised.”
“It is unlawful and undemocratic to commit acts of violence, including the destruction of property. We call upon all involved in Saturday’s protest to renounce violence to ensure a peaceful and constructive demonstration”, reads the US embassy’s statement. /ibna/
