US Defence Secretary, James Mattis arrived for an official visit to Skopje today. Mr. Mattis was received in Skopje airport by FYROM’s Defence minister, Radmila Sekerinska. Mattis is expected to hold a meeting with PM Zoran Zaev, after which the pair will deliver a joint press conference.
A week before his visit to Skopje, Mattis said that the aim of this visit was to offer support for the referendum that the country will hold on September 30th. Mattis also said that he was worried about the possibility for Moscow to interfere in this process.
According to Washington Post, before leaving for Skopje, Mattis told reporters that “there’s no doubt that Moscow is funding pro-Russian groups in Macedonia in order for the referendum on the name to fail”. /ibna/
