The US considers the activities of the drill-ship Yavuz, off the coast of Karpathia, to be illegal and urges Turkey to terminate them immediately and withdraw the drilling rig from the territorial sea of the Republic of Cyprus.

This statement is made at a time when Turkey is already preparing a fourth drilling rig for the Eastern Mediterranean, as Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said.

Responding to a question about Yavuz’s activities, a US State Department spokesman told the CNA that “only the ROC, acting through its government, can consent to activities such as drilling within its territorial sea”.

“The US is concerned about the activities of the drill-ship Yavuz, which operates within the territorial waters of the Republic of Cyprus. This provocative step is raising tensions in the region”, the State Department spokesman said.

“We urge”, he added, “Turkish authorities to cease unlawful activities immediately and to remove the Yavuz from the ROC’s territorial sea”.

He also said that “we encourage all parties to act with restraint. Resource development in the Eastern Mediterranean should promote cooperation and provide a foundation for durable energy security and economic prosperity throughout the region”.

The State Department spokesman said: “We continue to support development of an equitable solution for sharing the benefits of Cyprus’ hydrocarbon resources between the two communities”./ibna
