The top university in Greece appears to be the University of Crete, according to research-review of a Dutch university, on the basis of various bibliometric indicators.
In the greek classification next comes the University of Ioannina and after that the National Technical University of Athens, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Athens University and the University of Patras.
The Greek universities, however, are from the waist down in the world rankings. From the 750 institutions that were evaluated, the University of Crete occupies the 333rd place, the University of Ioannina the 450th, the National Technical University the 454th, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki the 506th, and the University of Patras, the 588th.
First in the ranking is the American Rockefeller University, and what’s noteworthy is that the top ten places are completely dominate by higher education institutions in the United States (MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, Stanford, California Institute of Technology, Princeton, Santa Barbara, San Francisco and Yale).
Leading institution in Europe is the University of Cambridge, followed by the School of Lausanne.
In European classification (288 universities), the University of Crete occupies the 150th position.
