On Monday, May 21, 104 people were sentenced by a Turkish court to life in prison for involvement in the attempted and failed military coup in 2016, in Turkey.
The Turkish daily Hurriyet wrote that it is “one of the heaviest penalties given since the attempt”.
“The court in the Aegean province of İzmir handed ‘aggravated life’ sentences to 104 of the 280 defendants”, Hurriyet reported, “the harshest punishment possible under Turkish law as it raises the minimum time in jail required for parole.”
Another 52 people were tried too. Twenty-one of them were given 20 years in prison for insulting the president, while another 31 were sentenced to 10 years and six months for being members of a “terrorist organisation”…. / IBNA
