The Turkish police arrested the businessman and chairman of the Anadolu Kultur cultural center, Osman Kavala, on Thursday at Turkish Ataturk Airport in Istanbul.
The information comes from Kavala’s lawyer, who stated that his client had been transferred to the anti-terrorist service, following a decision to detain him for seven days.
The site clarified that Kavala was detained as part of a “confidential” investigation as soon as he arrived in Istanbul from a conference in which he had participated in the city of Gaziantep in southeastern Turkey.
According to turkish outlets, the businessman will be questioned about some meetings held before a failed coup attempt in Turkey on July 15, 2016, while the police also seized computers from the organization’s offices.
EU’s special rapporteur on Turkey, Katti Piry, has expressed her concern at this arrest. “The capture of Osman Kavala in Istanbul is very disturbing news. I will propose to the European Parliament to make an extraordinary appeal for his release”, she wrote to her Twitter account./IBNA
