Turkish Airlines (THY) has cancelled 55 domestic and 26 international in a total of 80 flights for today (Thursday) due to the heavy snowfall that has plagued Turkey.
The majority of the cancelled flights where to or from Istanbul, while 16 flights between Ankara and the eastern provinces of Gaizantep, Diyarbakır, Mardin, Muş, Şırnak, Van and Kars are cancelled.
The services of private carrier Onur Airlines’ Diyarbakir and Atlas Jet’s three Antalya have been also canceled.
The heavy snowfall started on Tuesday night (December 10) and has gone on for two days with small intervals, resulting in the disruption of city traffic as well as the intra- and inter- city transportation.
The municipality’s salt tracks are operating nonstop in order to prevent the roads to turning into ice rinκs.
Despite this and other measures taken by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality the snowfall resulted in the injury of 9 people and the occurrence of 37 accidents last night (Wednesday).
