Turkey: We are landlords and not musafirs in the Mediterranean, says Erdogan

Peace in the Mediterranean will not come from any equation that does not fairly include Turkey and the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”, said the President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, taking the floor at the International Symposium on the Law of the Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean held in Istanbul.

Turkey is a Mediterranean country, said Recep Tayyip Erdogan, noting that “here, as throughout history, we are landlords and not musafirs. Every move and every step in the Mediterranean directly affects the security, the rights and the interests of our country”.

“Turkey is in favor of peace, co-operation, law and justice in the Mediterranean; not tensions”, adding: “As a nation that inherited Muslim culture and peace in the Mediterranean, we wish for the reinstatement of an environment of tranquility in this geographical area. The problems in the Mediterranean can be solved by seating all the protagonists in the region at the same table and not by excluding each other. No peace will emerge in the Mediterranean from any equation that does not fairly include Turkey and the ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’. Especially by the European Union, which not only let the diplomatic opportunities slip, but more than that succumbed to the ill-mannered behavior of Greece and Cyprus. Let us all come together to turn the Mediterranean into a basin of peace again. Let us not defile the white waters of the Mediterranean with new enemies”. /ibna
