Turkey: UN OCHA office established in Istanbul

An agreement was signed in New York on Thursday between the Turkish Republic as the host country and the United Nations on the establishment of a Humanitarian Coordination Office in Istanbul, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Under the agreement to set up an OCHA Office in Istanbul, some headquarters will be relocated to Geneva to support the global humanitarian coordination mandate and field operations worldwide.

The agreement is a concrete step towards the goal of turning Istanbul into a UN hub in line with Turkey’s business and humanitarian foreign policy, according to a statement from the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

“The decision of OCHA, which is one of our main international partners in the humanitarian dimension of the Syrian crisis and the implementation of our multilateral foreign policy in general, to establish an office in Istanbul demonstrates the confidence of the international community in our country and is a confirmation of our leading position in world humanitarian affairs”./ibna
