Turkey: Turkish Foreign Ministry reacted strongly to the partial lifting of arms embargo on Cyprus

The decision of the United States of America to lift the arms embargo on the Republic of Cyprus is not in line with the spirit of the alliance, the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced.

According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, “the decision announced by the US today (September 1st) to lift the arms embargo on the ‘Greek Administration of Southern Cyprus’ ignores the equality and balance between the two peoples on the Island”.

“It is certain that this decision will negatively affect the efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue”, the statement said.

The statement added that “at a time when efforts are being made to de-escalate tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean, such a decision by the United States, which poisons the environment of peace and stability in the region, is also not in line with the allied spirit”.

“We expect the United States to reconsider this decision and to support the ongoing efforts to consolidate peace and stability in the region.

Otherwise, Turkey, as a guarantor country, will resolutely take similar steps to guarantee the security of the Turkish Cypriot people, in accordance with its legal and historical responsibility”, concludes the announcement of the Turkish Foreign Ministry on the decision to lift the arms embargo on the Republic of Cyprus imposed by the US since 1987./ibna
