The Turkish Coast Guard rescued 56 persons on Friday who sought help in the Aegean Sea, according to security sources.
The asylum seekers, who were in a plastic boat, were rescued by the Turkish Coast Guard in the province of Izmir, according to sources, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on media information.
The occupants of the plastic boat, including women and children, were taken to the Turkish Coast Guard boat and were transported safely to the provincial immigration office for legal proceedings.
Turkey has been one of the main corridors for asylum seekers and migrants seeking asylum in Europe, especially since Syria’s civil war began in 2011.
According to official figures, Turkey hosts almost four million Syrians, more than any other country in the world./ibna
