Turkey releases two Greek imprisoned officers

A Turkish court ruled that the two officers from Greece who had been imprisoned in Edirne’s jail for 167 days can be released while pending trial and are free to return to Greece.

Greek Lt. Aggelos Mitretodis and noncommissioned officer Dimitros Kouklatzis were detained on March 1 on charges of illegal border crossing and attempted espionage, after being discovered by patrolling Turkish troops near the Pazarkule border gate, five kilometers from the province of Edirne, very near the Greek border.

According to Greek authorities, the presidential plane will transfer them from Alexandroupolis to Athens  either late tonight or tomorrow morning (Turkish sources say Wednesday morning)…. / IBNA
