Much depends on Turkey and not on what we do or what we want, said today the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades.
In his statements to journalists, on his arrival at the Archdiocese of Cyprus, where Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II gave a lunch on the occasion of the commemoration of the founding of the Church of Cyprus, the President of the Republic, to the question whether he shares the optimism of the DISY President that after the Turkish elections there will be a mobilization for the Cyprus issue, he said that “there is an estimation that I think we may have some developments after the elections”.
In a journalist’s observation that in order to have any developments Turkey must first give its consent to the appointment of a UN envoy, the President said “without a doubt, otherwise it will be the second case that the SG gives a name. In the first it was rejected, in the second they delay to answer. Therefore, without proper preparation by the SG, ie to determine whether there is a common ground, there is no case for the SG to decide. Therefore, much depends on Turkey and not on what we do or what we want”.
In a journalist’s observation that the President himself said that Turkey should end its provocations before resuming a new effort for the Cyprus issue, while Turkey is preparing for new provocations, President Anastasiades said “Let’s not get ahead of ourselvs. We will see if and to what extent the SG preconceives. At the same time, of course, we will see whether it will be positive or negative, depending on Turkey’s actions”.
In a journalist’s observation that a special envoy of the UN Secretary-General should, in addition to exploring conditions, also make efforts to create the conditions for a resumption of the Cyprus talks, the President of the Republic said that “I think this will be the role of the one that the SG will choose to send, in order to find out if there is ground to convene a new Summit”./IBNA
