Turkey congratulated North Macedonia and Albania on Friday for the launch of accession negotiations with the European Union.
“We congratulate our friends and allies, North Macedonia and Albania, for the start of their accession negotiations with the EU and the EU”, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
“Also, as Turkey we have supported the Euro-Atlantic integration of the Balkan countries from the beginning and we believe that this delayed decision will make a significant contribution to the stability and prosperity of the region and to the ongoing EU efforts to become a global power”, the statement adds.
“The most important instrument of EU’s soft power is a credible and equitable enlargement policy, which is not politicized at the expense of narrow national interests and encourages the 7 candidate countries, is needed more than ever”, the statement also says.
On Tuesday, EU foreign ministers reached a political agreement on opening accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia, while the decision of the European Affairs Council was adopted at the European Council teleconference on Thursday./ibna
