Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu had a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Thursday.
According to diplomatic sources, Cavusoglu and Lavrov discussed bilateral relations and issues related to Libya and Syria.
Despite differences in the two countries’ policies, more on Libya and less on Syria, Russia and Turkey have taken a number of initiatives to resolve crises through dialogue and diplomacy.
Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu had met with representatives of the Syrian opposition.
At the Foreign Ministry, Mevlut Cavusoglu received the new member of the Negotiating Committee in Syria, known as the Supreme Negotiating Committee, Anas al-Abdah, the Chairman of the Syrian Opposition and the National Coalition of the Revolutionary Forces, Naser al-Hariri, and the head of the Syrian interim government, Abdullah Rahman Mustafa. The Turkish Foreign Minister via Twitter reported that they met with the chairman of the Syrian Negotiating Committee Abdah before the third round of the Constitutional Committee.
Cavusoglu said he congratulated Abdah, who was elected chairman of the Syrian Negotiating Committee, and reiterated Turkey’s importance and support in the political process, which began with the support of Turkey.
Regarding the meeting he had with the President of the Syrian Opposition and the National Coalition of the Revolutionary Forces, Nasser Al Hariri stressed that he congratulated him on his election as President of the Coalition, which is the legal representative of the opposition.
According to the Turkish Foreign Minister, during the meeting they discussed efforts for a political solution to the Syrian conflict and developments in the field, while also reiterating Turkey’s support for the Syrian opposition.
Finally, regarding the meeting with the head of the Syrian interim government, Abdullah Rahman Mustafa said that they appreciate the successful work carried out in areas controlled by the opposition and will always be by the side of their Syrian brothers to ensure security and prosperity./ibna
