The General Secretariat of Armaments of Turkey announced it signed contracts for the purchase of 109 helicopters, T-70 Sikorsky, which will be produced by Turkish companies under the supervision of Sikorsky. The ultimate goal is to produce 300 helicopters. The work has been undertaken by the Turkish Aerospace Industry (TUSAŞ) in cooperation with subcontracting of other Turkish companies, with the contract for 109 helicopters reaching USD 3.5 billion.
Ankara says that the helicopters will be used for the needs of the army, the fire brigade and for other general needs such as civil protection.
The T-70, which is the Turkish name of the Sikorsky S-70, is a general use helicopter and can carry 15 fully equipped soldiers. That is, if need be Turkey will be able to transport anywhere around 1635 fully equipped men.
