Turkey is open to any cooperation to preserve the universal heritage of Hagia Sophia, a spokesman for Turkey’s ruling AKP party stated.
Hagia Sophia will be “better preserved” following Turkey’s decision to convert the iconic jewel in Istanbul’s architectural crown into a mosque after decades of operating as a museum, a spokesman for Turkey’s ruling AKP party, Omer Celik, said on Monday.
“All the features of Hagia Sophia will be preserved. It will be even better from now on”, said Omer Celik, a spokesman for the Justice and Development Party (AKP), following a meeting of the party’s council.
Celik also added that “UNESCO officials should be aware that Turkey is open to any co-operation in preserving the universal heritage of Hagia Sophia”. /ibna
