The plane carrying the first 3 million doses of the SinoVac Biotech vaccine for COVID-19 from China landed in the Turkish capital, Ankara, on Wednesday morning.
The Boeing 777, which departed Beijing with 17 vaccine containers, landed at Esenboga Airport at 5.44 am. local time (02:44 GMT).
Announcing the arrival of the vaccines on Twitter, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said the vaccination would begin after 14 days of testing.
“Once the examinations are completed, our vaccination program will be carried out under the coordination of the General Directorate of Public Health. We will succeed together”, he added.
Koca had previously said that Turkey would receive 50 million doses of the SinoVac vaccine and that the first 20 million doses would be given between December and January.
The minister also announced that the country would buy up to 30 million doses of another vaccine developed by the German biotechnology company BioNTech.
Vaccinations will not be mandatory at the moment and Turkey aims to convince the public of the need for coronavirus vaccination, enabling mass vaccination./ibna
