Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday spoke on the telephone with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, the Greek Prime Minister’s press office stated. The Prime Minister congratulated Trump on his victory in the U.S. elections and underlined the close ties of friendship and cooperation between the Greek and American people.
“I follow the work you do and it has great results,” he said according to sources close to Alexis Tsipras, US president elect Donald Trump, referred to the refugee and immigration crisis and the economic sector, in a discussion the two had on Trump’s initiative.
Donald Trump mentioned the recent Obama visit to Athens, which he described as “very good”. “The Greek people are a great people,” he said.
At this point Mr. Tsipras noted that the newly elected president has many Greek-Americans in his team, and Mr. Trump replied that Greek Americans voted for him in a great majority.
The conversation ended with Mr. Trump saying that when he takes office, they will speak again, that they will be in contact and that he would be “happy to talk in person sometime.”
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, during their conversation the crucial role Greece plays in the peace and security of the wider region-especially in a time of growing uncertainty in the area- and the considerable efforts that the Greek people have made to address both the economic and refugee crisis were highlighted.
At the same time the strengthening strategic cooperation between the two countries was confirmed in a number of areas, following the recent visit of outgoing US President Barack Obama to Greece.
Also, as noted in the announcement, Alexis Tsipras and Donald Trump agreed to maintain constant communication channels in the upcoming period./IBNA
