Alexis Tsipras sent a strong message against Ankara’s hostile activity and Erdogan’s inflammatory statements, stressing the need for a coordinated response from the Greek side.
“Whatever mistakes the current government has made in managing the refugee crisis, the attitude of Turkey and Erdogan can be described in one word: Impudence. And the country must respond to impudence in a coordinated and decisive way. Away from nationalistic assertions and knee-jerk reactions, but with a sense of patriotic responsibility”, the SYRIZA president emphasized.
Referring to the latest developments, he stressed that Turkey’s provocations had dangerously climaxed and stepped up in recent days. He specifically mentioned the attempts to ram Greek Coast Guard vessels and the overflight by a Turkish F-16 over northern Evros that happened today. “They constitute an unprecedented and dangerous escalation”, he noted.
At the same time, he attacked the Turkish President and accused him of “constantly talking about our country in extreme words. He compares us to the Nazis and tries to create the image of a criminal country that does not respect international law”.
“I’m not sure whether he is doing this to prepare his country’s public opinion for aggressive actions against Greece, or to simply bargain for more with the European leadership”, he stressed, adding:
“What I do know is that for Turkey, which illegally occupies Northern Cyprus and part of Syria, which is constantly in violation of international law in the region, and for the Turkish leadership, which commits human rights violations on a daily basis, pretending to be an arbiter of human rights and International Law against Greece is simply too much”. /ibna
