The Europarliament tried to become the fifth participant in the group of institutions that “follow the reforms programme in Greece”. That was announced as a big , almost democratic victory earlier today in Strasbourg, after the Conference of Presidents of political groups in the European Parliament. Brussels. But this is not exactly the case.
Greeks wanted right from the start for the Europarliament to be more actively involved, since it is a far more democratic institution compared to Commission. Yet the way the decision was taken, though it gives the impression that at least some some elected representatives would get involved in the programme, in fact it changes nothing of importance. According to sources, Germany and Eurogroup did not want a more active involvement of MPs and managed to minimize the role they could have –that is they will not participate more then they already did through the commitee of Economic and Monetary Affairs which met once in a while with representives of IMF and Eurogroup and Commission in order to be informed on the progress on the “Greek issue”.
