Tito’s belongings under controversy

Review by Christos T. Panagopoulos –

A row has broken out between Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav royal family and the family of late communist leader, Josip Tito, over his assets.

All four claim to have a right to the former country president’s personal belongings with Bosnian Finance Minister, Zenit Kelic saying: “The other five former Yugoslav republics deserve to share it”.

Included among the goods are a Rolls-Royce, white Cadillac and a Lincoln, gold jewellery, pearls, paintings, watches, a piece of moon rock from American astronauts and a prestigious special Soviet honour which experts estimate are worth millions as only two other people, Stalin and General Zhukov, have one.

But Tito’s widow, Jovanka Broz, who has been in hospital for the last month says the assets belong to her and her family.

The case is currently being reviewed by a court in Belgrade.
