Theft at the Bank of Albania, inspector refuses to turn up at the economy committee

Tirana, September 3, 2014/Independent Balkan News Agency

Economy parliamentary committee had planned to hold a hearing today with the general inspector of the Bank of Albania, Elivar Golemi, in relation to the theft happened at the central bank.

The head of this committee, Erion Brace, declared that the inspector has refused to answer through an official letter.

“In the letter sent to parliament, the lady in question says that she refuses to turn up, but that she’s ready to answer to any question. This is absurd. The lady in question either doesn’t know the law and parliament of Albania, or she ignores us. I’d like to remind her that the inspector of the Bank of Albania is appointed and discharged by parliament and she in turn ignores this institution”, said Brace.

He said that the Bank of Albania is the bank of the Albanian state and it’s not a private bank where everyone chooses when to answer.

The head of the committee declared that the inspector has not done her job in making internal periodical inspections of the operations for the administration of the Bank of Albania.

Brace said that this is a situation where the institution of the General Inspector of the Bank of Albania is not functioning, thus showing the degradation of the entire chain system at the Bank of Albania. Socialist member of the committee said that punitive measures must be taken against the inspector.

In her reaction, Mrs. Golemi said that the law on “The Bank of Albania” doesn’t attribute to the General Inspector any powers of the representation of the Bank of Albania, but, on the other hand, by recognizing and respecting the institution of parliament and its constitutional duty of monitoring the activity of the Bank of Albania, she expressed her readiness to answer in writing to every question or request for information issued by any MPs in the quickest time possible, on any matter which falls within the powers of the General Inspector. /ibna/
