The Prime Minister’s meetings in Shanghai

Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with the chiefs of Ali Baba, ZTE and ICBC Bank Groups during his visit to Shanghai, where he presented Greece as “the success story of the Eurozone in the coming years” and called them to invest in our country.

In a meeting with Ali Baba’s CEO Daniel Yong Zhang, they discussed Greece’s promotion through the Ali Express online platform, which has 700 million customers. According to the briefing by the Maximos Mansion officials, he expressed to the prime minister the plan to sell Greek products through the platform, while Mr. Mitsotakis also called for the promotion of Greek tourism through the site, as it offers tourist services as well. “You can sell Greek products in China and help Chinese tourists come to Greece”, Mitsotakis said.

Contacts with the largest bank in the world

The prime minister met in the afternoon (local time) with the president of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) Chen Siqing. ICBC is today the largest bank in the world and is set to open offices in Athens, while it is already part of a 300-million investment in solar thermal systems in Crete.

Mr. Mitsotakis also had a meeting in Shanghai with the president of ZTE telecommunications and technology company, Li Zizue. The head of ZTE, which already has a branch in Greece, told the prime minister that he is thinking of creating a technology park as well as a processing plant that can manufacture products for the rest of Europe.

A tour at the Greek stand for the Chinese President

The Prime Minister, accompanied by the deputy foreign minister (in charge of Economic Diplomacy and Extroversion) Mr. Frangogiannis, showed the Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi around the Greek stand in China International Import Expo Exhibition 2019, in the presence of the Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness and the Italian Foreign Minister Luigi di Maio.

Greece as a success story

Wrapping up his visit in China, the prime minister, accompanied by his wife Mareva Grabowski-Mitsotakis, attended a reception held in his honor at Hellas House venture by businessman Pavlos Kontomichalos.

In his brief speech, he said that “Greece will become the success story of the Eurozone in the coming years, while announcing that he will return to China in April, in particular in Beijing, as part of the “17 +1” initiative on China’s co-operation with Central and Eastern European countries.

The goal of 500,000 Chinese tourists by 2021

In an interview with the Chinese television network CGTN, Mitsotakis referred to the expansion of COSCO’s investment in the port of Piraeus and to the attraction of Chinese tourists, the two areas where there is still room for growth.

The prime minister noted that ships carrying goods from Asia to Europe would save 7 to 10 days if they opted for a destination in Piraeus port, which constitutes a natural gateway for goods, rather than sailing to northern European ports via the Gibraltar Straits.

He stressed that Greece is open to investment opportunities, while reiterating that the ultimate goal is to make Piraeus the number one port in Europe. It is noted that the new Greek government has approved within two months a new investment cycle that will significantly upgrade the port.

He stressed that Greece wants to expand its reach into the agri-food market, where it offers – among other things – high quality wines, dairy products and olive oil, especially when the large Chinese middle class tries new gastronomic stimuli.

The prime minister reiterated that his goal is to attract 500,000 visitors from China by 2021, noting that our country is the first country on the way from Asia to Europe and can offer a unique experience thanks to its rich history. He made special mention of the fact that a second direct flight between China and Greece was added (from Shanghai to Athens). /ibna
