On August 20, Lieutenant-Colonel Giorgos Ioannou has officially assumed his duties as Cyprus’s military attaché in the US, as part of the effort to strengthen the bilateral relations of the Republic of Cyprus with the US and to exercise defence diplomacy.
The first Cypriot military attaché in the US had gone to Washington earlier to be informed of his duties. Action had been taken, in coordination with the Foreign Ministry and the Embassy of the Republic in Washington, for the deployment of the military follower, which was officially accredited on August 20th. The military attaché acts as a liaison on defence cooperation issues, such as conducting joint Cyprus-US exercises.
The Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in the US posted on twitter that “the first military attaché of Cyprus in the US, Lieutenant Colonel George Ioannou, was accredited on August 20, 2019”.
It is recalled that the decision to deploy a defence attaché in the US was taken on 28 November 2018 by the Council of Ministers, following a previous 2011 decision on deploying defence attachés in major capitals./ibna
