Nicosia strongly condemns Turkey’s moves, which plans a second drilling in the Cypriot EEZ, outside the region of Karpasia. The Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus stresses that Turkey is violating international law and that the attempted second drilling is an escalation of Turkey’s repeated violation of the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus in accordance with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea the customary International Law, and is a serious violation of the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus.

The entire announcement of Cyprus’s Presidency

The Cypriot government condemns in the strongest terms the new illegal Turkish drilling in the east of Cyprus, in the sea area of the Karpasia peninsula, within the territorial sea of the Republic. The attempted second drilling, just two months after the start of the illegal drilling west of Cyprus within the Cypriot EEZ, is an escalation of the continued violation by Turkey of the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus under the UN Convention on The Law of the Sea and the customary International Law, and is a serious violation of the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus.

Turkey continues to violate international law, conventional and customary, disparagingly disrespecting the calls of the European Union and the international community to end its illegal actions and respect the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus to explore and exploit its natural resources within its maritime zones. Instead of proceeding to dialogue, as called upon by the international community, it deliberately avoids it, in order to create new fait accompli.

It is indeed paradoxical that, while Turkey does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus, a UN and European Union Member State which has concluded international agreements with its neighbors invokes, international law and claims to act after the “licensing” of the illegal occupation regime. In this regard, it is underlined that the drilling activities allegedly carried out by the “TRNC” are illegal and void, as also the secessionist entity itself is illegal and non-existent in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions [541 1983) and 550 (1984).

Let Ankara realize that the only way to deal with the problems it creates is to immediately proceed to an intensive and decisive dialogue that will lead us to a solution on the basis of the relevant United Nations resolutions and the principles upon which the European Union is based. A solution which, among other things, will answer any problems we face today because of the unacceptable Turkish occupation.

The Republic of Cyprus will continue to defend its legitimate rights for the benefit of all its legitimate citizens, intensifying its efforts at the legal, political and diplomatic level, making full use of its potential, especially within the framework of the European Union. It is recall in this respect the decisions of the Council of the European Union condemning Turkish unlawful acts, in particular the European Council Conclusions of 20 June 2019, in which the European Union underlined the direct and serious impact that Turkish actions have on the whole a range of Euro-Turkish relations, to which the Union will respond by taking appropriate measures./ibna
