There was tension in Syndagma Square just a few minutes ago during the demonstration of teachers, school security guards and cleaners that takes place at this time outside the Ministry of Administrative Reforms, where the minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, is meeting representatives from the Troika in order to inform them of the progress regarding the layouts in the public sector.

Police tried to make way for the Troika representatives to enter the building, but the demonstrators resisted and this resulted in tension causing one of the demonstrators to faint.

Tensions were high earlier in the morning as well when the teachers, school security guards and cleaners that had been “suspended”, as part of the economic reforms in the educational sector, demonstrated outside the ministry and demanded to speak with Mitsotakis.

The police intervened using chemicals, while 17 demonstrators were arrested, among who was the president of the teachers’ trade union (OLME), Themis Kotsifakis. All the arrestees were set free a few hours later.

“We were standing on the pavement and a group of demonstrators were at the ministry’s courtyard. They don’t even allow us to have a peaceful demonstration any more”, Kotsifakis stated on SKAI TV station. He also said that a woman was injured during the scuffle.

Mitsotakis and the representatives of the Troika were booed by the demonstrators upon their arrival at the ministry.
