In FYR Macedonia, the teacher’s strike will be followed by massive protests.

The Teachers’ Union has issued a press statement today saying that on Wednesday, a protest will take place everywhere in the country, while on Friday, a massive protest will be held in Skopje, in front of the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Labor and Social Policies and Ministry of Culture.

“If these ministries do not engage in social dialogue and continue to ignore teachers, then on Friday, a protest will take place in front of ministries. We will not withdraw from our requests for pay rises and the lifting of penalties for teachers”, declared Selajdin Destani, head of the Union.

The Union has invited citizens of the country to join the protest, in order to enable an acceptable solution for teachers.

But, ministry of Education has stressed that it’s ready to engage in talks, but only if the union decided to suspend the strike and then resume social dialogue.

Union of Teachers demands a 25% pay rise, the lifting of fines for teachers, which have had negative results in last year’s external exams and other conditions for the advancement of the teaching process. The strike will take place in almost 90% of schools in the country, while as of January 20, students continue not to take classes. /ibna/
