The Germans have been proven to be the best tourists for Greece, based both on their revenues ranking among all countries as well as on the average spending per visitor. According to the Institute of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), Greece’s most important markets for 2018, as the revenues show, are Germany, the United Kingdom, the US, France and Italy. In fact, these six countries, including Russia, constitute 41.5% of the total amount of visits, 49.7% of overnight accommodation and more than half (52.2%) of tourist revenues in Greece.
As for the most spending per night, it was reported by visitors from the US (89 euros), while the least spending per visit was reported from Germany (614 euros), due to the visitors’ long stay (an average of 8.8 nights).
The overwhelming majority (81.9% of visits, 86.2% of overnight stays and 88.1%) of revenues from the incoming tourism were mainly centered to 5 regions, namely the South Aegean, Crete, Attica, Central Macedonia and Ionian Islands.
These conclusions are drawn from a study by SETE on incoming tourism focused on “Who is going where? How long do they stay? How much do they spend?”.
According to the study’s results:
* Overall, 30.1 million visitors made 34.8 million visits to the country’s 13 Regions, achieving a surge of 12.3% compared to 2017. That is, each traveler visited on average 1.16 Regions. Furthermore, 12 out of the 13 Regions showed an increase in the number of visits and 9 out of 13 recorded an overnight accommodation increase, resulting in a revenue boost compared to 2017.
* Regarding the overnight accommodation, the number stood at 227 million, up by 8.2%, whereas tourist revenues reached 15.6 billion euros, achieving a growth of 10.2%. Expenditures per visit per Region averaged at 449 euros, down by 1.8% compared to 2017 (458 euros), as a result of the reduction in the length of the stay, although expenditures per overnight accommodation surged.
* As for the average expenditures per night in the 13 regions of the country, they averaged at 69 euros last year, up by 1.9% compared to 2017 (68 euros). The highest point of expenditures was recorded in the South Aegean region at 86 euros, achieving an increase of 9.3%. By contrast, the lowest point in expenditures per night was recorded in the Western Macedonia region at 46 euros, down by 12%.
* The average length of stay per visit in the country’s regions was 6.5 nights, down by 3.7%. The maximum stay of 8.4 nights was recorded in the Region of Crete, with the 2017 levels remaining unchanged. For the year of 2018, the minimum stay was 3.4 nights and was recorded in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, recording a decrease of 16.6%./ibna
