A strong earthquake measuring 5.1 Richter occurred at 14:13 (local time), 23 km from Athens downtown. The seismic vibration was particularly noticeable throughout the Prefecture of Attica as well as in the Northern Peloponnese and central Greece.
The focal depth of the earthquake according to the indications so far is 12 km. The earthquake of 5.1 Richter was followed by aftershocks, with the stronger registered at 4.3 Richter at 15:11 (local time). No injuries or damage to buildings have been reported so far. The only problems that have arisen regard the telecommunication and electricity.
Government’s spokesperson noted:
An earthquake of an initial estimate of 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred earlier today at 14.12 pm. The epicenter of the earthquake was 23 km northwest of Athens, in the region of Parnitha. There have been no reports of injuries, only of damages in old, uninhabited buildings.
Problems in mobile communication networks were temporary -due to network overloading- and all networks are now functioning properly.
