Romania’s most titled football team is now without a coach. Mirel Radoi resigned after Steaua’s latest defeat. Last night, the team lost against Astra Pitest, 0-1. Steaua’s owner now says that Radoi would have resigned regardless of the result against Astra and that the reasons for his departure have more to do with his relationship with the players rather than the temporary lack of good results. “I knew he was about to leave and I asked him to stay at least for last night’s match. He is not getting along with the team and he feels that he’s not making himself understood by the players. I insisted, I pleaded with him to stay, but he said it was in the team’s best interest that he left. There was no argument, no fight, nothing like that. He’ll remain at the club, in a different position”, Steaua’s owner Gigi Becali said.
Being a coach at Steaua is maybe the most desired position for any football coach in Romania, but the club’s owner is now taking his time before naming a new team leader. “I’m in no hurry. There are 4 matches to go until the winter break and for these matches the second coach Dumitru Dumitriu will be on the bench. Then I’ll see”, Becali stated. After 19 matches in the Romanian Liga 1, Steaua is in fourth place, 10 points behind leader Astra Giurgiu.
