The issue of the name dispute may be one of the topics of discussion in the Berlin Summit on the Balkan.
Although Greece will not participate in the conference hosted by the German chancellor Merkel on August 28, authorities in the country do not rule out the possibility of introducing the topic of the name dispute, bearing in mind Merkel’s interest to help in solving this problem.
In this conference, FYR Macedonia will be represented by Nikola Gruevski, Foreign Minister Popovski and deputy prime minister for Economic Affairs, Vladimir Pesevski.
On the other hand, according to the authorities of the country, this conference will confirm that the future of the Balkan is in the European Atlantic structures, although enlargement is not currently part of the agenda.
“The political component consists on the fact that a clear signal will be sent by Germany that the future of the countries of Western Balkan is in the European Union, although enlargement will not happen in the near future. On the other hand, these countries will work in order to solve economic issues and work on energy and infrastructure projects”, declared the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Skopje, Gabriel Atanasov.
According to him, like it happened with Albania which obtained great support by Germany in being granted the EU candidate status, FYROM too is interested in taking forward the integration of the country and the solution of the name dispute with Greece. /ibna/
