Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, WTA’s 5th, on Thursday advanced to the quarter-finals of the women’s singles event at the 2,413,663-USD Rogers Cup tournament, after she defeated Karolina Pliskova (CZE), 6-3, 6-3.
Halep, a 2015 finalist, won in one hour and 7 minutes.
Halep, 24, the third seed of the tournament after Serena Williams and Garbine Muguruza withdrew, is leading Pliskova, 24, WTA’s 17th, 4-1 in head-to-head statistics. She won 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the 2015 final in Dubai; 6-4, 6-4, in the round of 16 at Indian Wells, also in 2015, and this year she has won the quarter-finals in Sydney, 6-4, 7-5. The only victory of the Czech player was this year in Cluj-Napoca, in a Fed Cup tie, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2.
For her performance so far, Halep has won 57,690 US dollars and 190 WTA points, and in the quarter-finals she could meet another Czech, Petra Kvitova, if Kvitova defeats Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova.
