The General Mayor’s office side walked the law when it approved the works intended to modernize the sidewalk of one of Bucharest’s central arteries. In the most recent move against the Mayor’s office, representatives of a board that inspects public construction works say they will sue the city’s administration. The inspectors say the works were illegal, since the project did not have any authorization. Plus, the small pillars that were installed pose a great danger to pedestrians and bikers, the inspectors say. Plus, bike lanes are separated from the street with 10-centimeter tall border stone that could be extremely dangerous in case of accident.

Ironically, Calea Victoriei was considered to be the only artery in Bucharest that is up to the requests of modern transportation, including special lanes for bikers. But the actual result of the so called modern project is a total failure in terms of safety and budget. The cost of the unauthorized works was 8.7 million euros, two times higher than the initial estimation.
