Serbia’s new economic measures to be announced on Monday

Review by Christos T. Panagopoulos –

Serbian First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic stated on Wednesday that Minister of Finance Lazar Krstic and Minister of Economy Sasa Radulovic would present the new package of economic measures on Monday.

The government’s task will be the fight against tax evasion, grey economy, smuggling and all that is against the economy’s interests, Vucic said at the opening of the international business conference entitled ‘Quantum Leap’. He added that it is not up to the government to find a job for anyone, but it needs to create good employment conditions.

The government’s task is to encourage private businesses, Vucic said and noted that over the past few years, Serbia only took out loans and production did not progress. Vucic said that economy has to be healthy and profitable.

He stated that in the public sector, salaries are being increased and the private sector cannot follow this dynamics. He also said that the budget deficit needs to be reduced by 2 percent, and added that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is calling for the introduction of the solidarity tax for public sector salaries for income of RSD 50,000 and RSD 70,000, as well as for those of RSD 40,000 (EUR 1 = RSD 114).

According to Vucic, IMF wants additional dismissals in the public sector and the government has to do something and make savings. Vucic said that the parliament will soon adopt laws to remove bureaucratic obstacles for investments in business in Serbia.

He stated that Magna Seating company opened in Odzaci on Wednesday, and noted that BOSS and Mercedes will make investments and open plants in Serbia.
