Serbian Defense Minister Bratislav Gasic, during a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator in Serbia Irena Vojackova-Solorano and head of the UN Office in Belgrade Peter Due, thanked the UN for the assistance it provided to Serbia regarding the catastrophic floods that had a devastating effect on the country.
Serbian Defence MIniser also took the opportunity to express the concerns of the Serbian government over the decision of interim institutions in Pristina to form Kosovo’s armed forces.
“We see the international presence as a guarantee of security in Kosovo-Metohija, which is why the current process of reducing international troops is watched with concern”, Gasic said according to the press relese issued by the Defence Ministry.
The officials agreed that the Defense Ministry’s cooperation with the UN and its specialized agencies and bodies, in addition to the participation of members of Serbian Armed Forces (SAF) in multinational UN operations is imperative for the continuation of the reform process and Serbia’s progress towards full EU membership.
According to the Serbian Defense Ministry, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Edmond Mulet will soon make an official visit to Serbia.
