His intention not to run for president in the pro-Kurdish HDP conference announced the incumbent president of the party Selahattin Demirtas, who remains imprisoned in Edirne’s prisons. Demirtaş, with a letter he sent to GDP, says that “under any conditions I will continue to serve the party and the people to give the fight for democracy. We are not terrorists despite their unfair, unfounded and unlawful accusations. In order to continue our struggle in a fresh way and with new faces, I inform you of my intention not to be a candidate for the presidency of the party”.
Demırtas remains jailed since November 4, 2016, and is accused of being involved in and heading a terrorist organisation, being a threat to the unity of the Turkish state and is facing 142 years in prison.
The hearing for his case was postponed for February 14, 2018./IBNA
