Freedom, at last for former football player Gheorghe Popescu. He was released from jail today, after having spent half of the 3 years sentence he got for money laundering.
Magistrates rejected a final appeal of the prosecutors and that puts an end to any possible efforts to keep the former footballer behind bars. Sources close to Popescu told Romanian TV station Digi24 that right after his release Popescou would pack his bags and go to his native town Calafat (in southern Romania) to organize a memorial service for his late father, who died while the former footballer was in jail.
Almost a month ago, a court in Bucharest ruled that Popescu was eligible for conditional release, but Prosecution contested the decision and filed for an appeal. The former captain of FC Barcelona and Romania’s national football team was convicted on March 2014 at the end of a very public trial where he was accused of money laundering following the transfers of several players.
