Romania recorded a rapid decline in the number of pensioners from June 2020 to the middle of this year, when the number of pensioners fell by 61,000. This is the biggest decrease since 2013 so far.
Sociologists estimate that this decrease is due to the pandemic and warn that in 2050, 1 in 4 Romanians will be retired, which means that Romania will have the oldest population in the EU. The bleak landscape is completed by economists, who estimate that the country will not be able to meet pension costs.
In 2030 the number of pensioners will exceed that of workers, they believe. They recommend that the population should save money while working and put it into pension schemes or investment funds. Today, the average pension in Romania is 1,500 lei./ibna
