At the extraordinary session to be convened today, the Senate will be studying a bill that provides for the autonomy of Szekler Land in Transylvania, according to Agerpres national news agency. This proposal pitched by the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) dated December 2019, was tacitly approved by the House of Representatives on 23 April automatically, as no vote was taken by the end of the deadline set for its consideration. PNL, PSD, USR, ALDE, PMP and Pro Romania have stated they will vote against the proposal in the Senate. In addition, President Ioannis strongly criticized the PSD on this occasion.
President Klaus Iohannis recently stated that what was taking place in Parliament was unbelievable. The head of state accused the PSD of helping the UDMR pass a law by the House of Representatives that would provide broad autonomy in the Szekler region of Transylvania.
“It is unbelievable what is happening in Parliament. The PSD has paved the way for the UDMR to pass a law that would give autonomy to the Szekler region. It’s amazing what happened with the PSD. It is unbelievable to see what agreements have been made in Parliament. While we are fighting the pandemic, and as we fight for the lives of Romanians, the PSD, the big PSD is fighting in the secret offices of Parliament to hand Transylvania over to the Hungarians. What did Viktor Orban promise you in return for this agreement? This means a toxic majority. Now it will become clear why we wanted early elections. As long as I am President of Romania, there will be no such law”, said Romanian President Klaus Iohannis. /ibna
