Romania: Florin Cîțu keeps his position

Yesterday the Senate voted in favor of a simple motion of censure against the Minister of Finance, Florin Cîțu, with 59 votes in favor, 56 against and two abstentions. The proposal was put forward by PSD entitled “PNL Governance – Austerity is Your Name”. It is noted that under the Senate Rules of Procedure, the simple motion of censure against a member of the Cabinet expresses the Senate’s position on a particular issue and does not imply the Minister’s dismissal.

The Prime Minister supported the Minister of Finance and said he would keep his position. Earlier, Florin Cîțu had announced that he would resign if asked by PNL.

Cîțu is in open dispute with his predecessor Eugen Teodorovici, who has accused him of knowing early on that the budget deficit could exceed 4% this year, and threatened to release a document proving that PSD would not impose since 2002 the law on increasing pensions. /ibna
